When we read that the Stanford band had once been sanctioned by the NCAA for re-enacting the Irish Potato Famine at a Notre Dame football game, we knew our campaign needed to reflect the irreverent brilliance that made Stanford, and the Stanford student, different from their peers in higher education. That being said, we were pretty sure the University wouldn't buy this campaign and we would be summarily fired after the presentation.
Stanford chose to launch the ads on their jumbotron during the big Stanford -Cal game. The Stanford student section went crazy. The at-home audience emailed the Provost to know where they could find the videos.
The best part: they became part of the syllabus for Advertising at my alma mater, Vanderbilt.
(Oh, and they were featured in Communication Arts)
